Microsuction Ear Wax Removal in Liverpool: Gentle, Water-Free and Done in a Single Visit

Microsuction is a gentle, dry procedure that uses controlled suction to clear ear wax without a drop of water. Carl uses a fine suction probe and a specialist otoscope to see exactly what is happening inside your ear canal before and during the removal, so nothing is done blindly. Most people leave the appointment with noticeably clearer hearing and immediate relief from the blocked, muffled feeling that brought them in.

What is involved

  1. 1

    Otoscope examination

Before anything else, Carl examines both ear canals using a specialist otoscope. This gives a clear view of the wax, its position and how the eardrum looks, so the right technique is used from the start.

  2. 2

    Gentle suction

A fine suction probe is introduced into the ear canal. The suction draws the wax out directly, without touching the canal walls. There is no water, no flushing and no mess.

  3. 3

    Visual check throughout

Carl checks progress as the procedure continues, adjusting the probe position carefully. You will hear a low hissing sound from the equipment, which is completely normal.

  4. 4

    Post-removal review

Once the wax is cleared, Carl checks both canals again and explains what was found. If any wax remains that cannot be safely removed in this session, he will advise on the best next step.

Why patients choose it

  • Water-free, so no soaking or dripping sensation
  • Performed under direct vision so nothing is done blindly
  • Typically completed in a single appointment
  • No pre-treatment with ear drops required in most cases, though drops may help with very hard wax
  • Suitable for most patients including hearing aid wearers
  • Immediate relief for many people with wax-related blocked or muffled hearing

Questions about this service

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal: your questions answered

What exactly is microsuction?
Microsuction is a method of ear wax removal that uses a small suction probe to draw wax out of the ear canal. Unlike ear syringing or irrigation, it uses no water at all. Carl uses an otoscope throughout the procedure so he can see inside your ear canal clearly, meaning nothing is done by feel alone. It is widely considered the safest and most comfortable method currently available.
Does microsuction hurt?
No, microsuction is not painful for the vast majority of people. You will feel a gentle sensation inside the ear and hear a low hissing sound from the suction equipment, but there is no discomfort beyond that in most cases. If your wax is particularly hard or sitting close to the eardrum, Carl will work carefully and let you know what to expect before proceeding.
Is microsuction safe?
Yes. Microsuction is performed under direct visualisation using an otoscope, which means Carl can see the ear canal and eardrum clearly throughout. There is no water pressure applied to the eardrum and the suction probe does not need to touch the canal walls to be effective. Carl Heffy is a trained practitioner working to professional standards at our West Derby clinic.
How long does a microsuction appointment take?
Most microsuction appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes. The time varies depending on whether one or both ears need treatment, how much wax is present and how soft or hard the wax is. If you have used ear drops beforehand to soften any very hard wax, the procedure tends to be quicker.
Do I need to use ear drops before my microsuction appointment?
For most patients, no pre-treatment is necessary. However, if your wax is very hard or impacted, using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops for a few days beforehand can soften the wax and make the removal easier and more comfortable. Carl will advise you on this when you book if it is relevant to your situation.
How is microsuction different from ear syringing?
Ear syringing forces water into the ear canal to dislodge wax, and it is done without a clear view of the inside of the ear. Microsuction uses gentle suction rather than water pressure, and it is carried out under direct vision throughout. Many patients find microsuction faster, more comfortable and more effective, particularly those who have had unsatisfactory results with syringing in the past.
Can I have microsuction if I have had a perforated eardrum?
Possibly, yes. Unlike water-based methods, microsuction does not carry the same risk of water entering the middle ear through a perforation. However, Carl will assess your ear carefully before proceeding. If you have a known current perforation or a history of perforations, please mention this when you book so your suitability can be confirmed before your appointment.
Will microsuction help with my tinnitus?
If your tinnitus is caused or worsened by ear wax build-up, microsuction may relieve symptoms caused by that wax. Tinnitus has many possible causes, and removing wax does not guarantee the tinnitus will stop. Carl will explain what he finds during your examination. If wax does not appear to be the cause, he will advise on appropriate next steps.
I wear hearing aids. Can I still have microsuction?
Yes, and hearing aid wearers are among the patients who benefit most from microsuction. Hearing aids can accelerate wax build-up in the ear canal, and many hearing aid wearers need professional wax removal more frequently than people who do not wear aids. Microsuction is particularly well suited to hearing aid users because it is water-free and precise.
How often will I need microsuction?
This varies considerably between individuals. Some people only ever need one appointment because wax does not build up again significantly. Others, particularly those who naturally produce large amounts of wax or wear hearing aids, may benefit from a check every six to twelve months. Carl will give you his honest assessment based on what he finds in your ears.
